Soldier Township is located just north of the Topeka city limits, between 75 highway and K4 highway, and maintains over 125 miles of paved roads.

Our current work schedule is Monday through Thursday, from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

MECHANIC

SUMMARY: Under general supervision, performs work of moderate to considerable difficulty in mechanic work on equipment, operates trucks and construction equipment. Works with snow removal equipment, performs all other related work as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: Diagnoses mechanical problems; repairs and rebuilds water pumps, mowers, saws, self-propelled rollers, and compactors, etc.; Diagnoses problems and repairs rolling stock such as mowing tractors, end loaders, snow removal equipment, salt spreaders, etc.; Diagnoses problems, repairs and/or schedules repairs on brakes, transmissions, rear ends, clutches, hydraulic systems, valves, pumps, and electrical problems. Performs tune-ups, oil changes and regular maintenance on township vehicles and equipment routinely as needed. Welds equipment as needed. Prepares shop work orders on equipment repair. Orders parts as needed to maintain stock; pick up parts. Makes service road calls as needed. Maintains inventory of supplies and materials charged to projects or equipment repairs; fills out equipment sheets and submits required paperwork to office. Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS: Knowledgeable use of tools, materials and equipment used in road maintenance and repair. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to perform strenuous physical labor.

EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and two (2) years related experience.

Possession of a valid Kansas Driver’s License.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Hiring conditional upon passing drug/alcohol testing and is subject to random testing throughout employment.
