The City of Richmond is looking to hire a full time Equipment Mechanic, Senior to perform maintenance and repairs on our constructions equipment, Safety vehicles, and more.  This is an opportunity to join a fun and fast-paced working environment.  At the City of Richmond you can build a successful and longstanding career while working with a team that values your skills and creativity.  

Under supervision our Equipment Mechanic, Senior, services and performs mechanical repairs on City vehicles and a wide variety of motorized equipment; performs tire repairs; and performs good housekeeping and safety practices in the work areas. Services and repairs fleet vehicles and electronic devices, and documents work performed. Does related work as required.  Your work plays an integral part in keeping our Public Works, Fire, Police and other City teams moving and safe.  You will perform ( and certify) mandates smog checks, routine maintenance, BIT inspections, and always follow safety protocols.  If you enjoy using your skills to fix equipment and solve problems, come join our team.

Position Description and Duties

Incumbents in this class are assigned to a variety of mechanical tasks of a specific or limited nature.  More complex mechanical and diagnostic problems are referred to the journey class, the Combination Equipment Mechanic.

The intent of this job specification is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Fuels, lubricates, and performs scheduled preventive maintenance on automobiles, trucks, loaders, graders, and other City vehicles and mechanical equipment. Performs routine safety checks on vehicles and equipment.
  • Makes repairs to fleet vehicles, including electrical, wheel and brake, steering and suspension, and HVAC.
  • Performs pickups and deliveries of vehicles and equipment.  
  • Obtains mechanical parts and supplies required to perform repair work.
  • Responds to emergency service calls and makes minor repairs to equipment in the field, as needed.
  • Cleans and washes vehicles and other equipment.
  • Maintains tire, fuel, oil, and other inventory and service records.
  • Guides and assists lower-level staff in service and repair duties.
  • Performs related work as required.


Minimum Qualifications

Required Education and Experience 

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent, including completion of an apprenticeship in automotive repair
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in vehicle maintenance and repair 
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities

Required Licenses or Certifications
  • Automatic Service Excellence (ASE) certification desirable 
  • Possession of a valid California Class B Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record is an ongoing requirement

Having all of the minimum qualifications guarantees neither advancement nor placement on the Employment List.

Employment Eligibility List:  A ranking of "A" (Best Qualified), "B" (Well Qualified), or "C" (Qualified) is required to achieve a position on the Employment Eligibility List.  This List will be in effect for a maximum of two (2) years; however, the list may be canceled, without notice, after six (6) months.
