Position Summary

Performs skilled major and minor repairs and overhauls on automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, heavy-duty equipment, tractors, sweepers, mowers, small engines and other related duties as assigned.

Compensation Range: $34.42 - $45.34 hourly
Expected Hiring Range: $34.42 - $39.88 hourly

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Examine vehicle or equipment and test for proper operation. 
  • Estimate costs and time that will be involved and determine cost effectiveness in repairs and time.
  • Determine if parts will be repaired or replaced.
  • Perform work according to service manuals, schematics, and hydraulic flow charts.
  • Maintain daily work records on work done, material used, and time spent using computerized fleet maintenance programs.
  • Perform complete repair and maintenance, overhaul automobiles, trucks, tractors, sweepers, and other light and heavy-duty equipment.
  • Perform mechanical repairs on all vehicle systems, including but not limited to electrical, hydraulic, transmission, air conditioning, heating, fuel, and mechanical systems.
  • Perform minor and major tune-ups as assigned.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on vehicles and equipment as assigned.
  • Design and implement minor modifications to existing equipment, as directed.
  • Prepare a complete and accurate maintenance report listing vehicle/equipment repaired, parts used, hours of labor and comments for future reference.
  • Follow safety rules and regulations.
  • Perform necessary inspections.
  • Maintain clean work stations. 
  • Work cooperatively with other departments and the public as needed to complete assigned tasks.
  • Perform maintenance operator duties as needed.
  • Make recommendations to City staff for the repair and replacement of vehicles/equipment.
  • Provide information regarding needed parts to the supervisor; purchase parts as delegated and authorized; maintain the necessary inventory. 
  • Operate a variety of machines and equipment used in automotive repair work.

Hours of Work

Normal hours of work are from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. This position will be required to work occasional evenings and weekends to provide for the ongoing maintenance and operations of the City operations. This may include seasonal shift changes that will involve extended alternative schedules including late night and early morning hours. This position is part of the snow and ice control team and will be subject to emergency call-back for these purposes.


Minimum Qualifications

* Three (3) to five (5) years progressively responsible experience as a skilled Equipment Mechanic in a specialized field of equipment repair including tune-ups, heavy gasoline and diesel powered equipment repair, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, industrial and construction equipment repair 
* High school graduation supplemented by specialized training in related field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the work.
* Valid driver's license and ability to obtain class B license with air brake and tanker endorsements within one (1) year of hire.

Desirable Qualifications: 
* Vocational, technical, or other post secondary education
* Master Technician ASE certification
