SUMMARY OBJECTIVE
Hiring range is negotiable between $54,236 and $70,496 depending on a candidate's qualifications and experience
Performs advanced skilled mechanical work on a variety of diesel-powered heavy equipment; does related work as required. Â An employee in this class assists with planning, Â prioritizing and accomplishing all heavy equipment maintenance. Work involves extensive and expert knowledge in diesel-powered heavy equipment maintenance and repair. Employee ensures all work is completed properly and in accordance with the City's safety and compliance procedures, as well as all federal and state regulations. Â Â Â
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs complicated maintenance and repair of diesel-powered heavy equipment.
Performs preventive maintenance and NCDMV Safety inspections on heavy equipment.
Diagnoses mechanical problems using computerized testing equipment, determines required repair or replacement of parts and initiates repair on heavy equipment.
Repairs and overhauls brakes, ignition and fuel systems, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies, air conditioning systems, cooling systems, hydraulic systems and exhaust emission control systems.
Tunes diesel engines, services valves, fuel filters and turbo chargers, and pressure checks fuel filters, governors, etc.
Takes down and removes air compressors, hydraulic systems, pumps and related equipment.
Services, diagnoses, repairs and maintains speed tandem drive axles with air or electric shift, hydrostatic driven, heavy duty multi-axle suspensions, both conventional steel or air springs.
Repairs or replaces shoes, pads, drums, hoses, calipers, cylinders, any heavy-duty air brakes.
Repairs and replaces drive shaft, differential, axle, manual, automatic and sophisticated computer-controlled transmissions, clutches, transfer cases, power take-off systems, transmission reversers, all-wheel drive steering axles and final drives.
Repairs or replaces fuses, batteries, lights, instruments, warning devices, controls and switches, computer controls, modules, alternators, starters, and defective cables and wiring.
Replaces mufflers, manifolds, turbochargers, blowers, and pipes.
Flushes radiator, replaces hoses and thermostat, repairs or replaces radiator and water pump, fan drives, DCA treatment filters, air intercoolers and oil coolers.
May perform minor body and paint work.
Completes diversified electrical work on heavy equipment, including troubleshooting electrical problems and repairing or replacing defective parts, repairing and adjusting lights, and repairing generators and starters.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITITES
Knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair of heavy equipment, including dump trucks, specialized fire apparatuses, solid waste, construction and maintenance equipment.
Knowledge and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery, such as drills, presses, grinders, micrometers, brake relining and drum grinding machines, welding equipment; and the ability to diagnose the more common defects in the drive trains, chassis and other components of automotive equipment.
Ability to detect by inspection any worn or broken heavy equipment parts.
Ability to keep records of repairs and service operations and to make reports.
Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
Ability to interpret and work from sketches, diagrams and installation and repair charts.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work requires some strenuous physical exertion such as walking over rough or difficult terrain; recurring standing, stooping, climbing or walking; recurring lifting of moderately heavy items weighing between 25 and 75 pounds and may require the occasional lifting of objects weighing in excess of  74 pounds.  The work may require specific physical characteristic and abilities such as heightened strength, mobility, dexterity and full range of motion.  WORK ENVIRONMENT:     The work is generally performed in inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposed to various hazards such as working in heavy traffic, chemicals, moving mechanical parts, oils, in close quarters, manholes, or trenches. Work is also subject to the final OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens. The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental risks which require a range of safety and other precautions. Employees will be required to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as masks, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shield.Â
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:Â
High school Diploma or equivalent;
Five (5) years of experience repairing heavy equipment;
Or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid North Carolina Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License,Â
Possession of a NC State Safety Inspection License or ability to obtain within six (6) month of hire date.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSÂ
Possession of a valid North Carolina Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License,Â
Diesel certifications and/or mechanic trade school training; Â
