SUMMARY
Repairs and overhauls brake and suspension and steering related systems in automobiles, buses, trucks, trailers and other automotive vehicles in accordance with published Truck and Van Labor Time Guides by performing the following duties.  


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be
assigned.
Positively represents Betts to all customers, vendors associates and other contacts in a respectful and professional manner.
Examines vehicle and discusses with Service Manager nature and extent of damage or malfunction.
Plans work to be performed on vehicle.
Completes paper work documenting part numbers and description of work to be performed.
Pushes handle of hydraulic jack or pushes hoist control to raise vehicle.
Gains access to area to be repaired or replaced located on the underside of vehicle or trailer.
Removes unit such as springs, walking beams, u-bolts, hangers, torque arms, equalizers, kingpins, drag links, air systems, shocks and other suspension parts, brakes and steering related parts.
Disassembles unit and inspects part for wear.
Performs repair or replaces part as necessary.
Must have a basic knowledge of functions of air brake systems.
Realigns and adjusts brakes, aligns front end, replaces shock absorbers, repairs leaf springs and bends ubolts as required.
Must know how to properly use a cutting torch and have the capability to weld with a stick or mig welder.
Replaces defective brake shoe units.
Measures brake drum to determine amount of wear.
Must have a basic understanding of brake hydraulic systems including testing.
Repairs or replaces leaky brake cylinders.
Repairs or replaces defective air compressor in airbrake systems.
Fills master brake cylinder with brake fluid, pumps brake pedal, or uses pressure tank, and opens valves on hydraulic brake system to bleed air from brake lines.
Actively participate in the daily operation of the branch by demonstration a team player attitude while maintaining a safe work environment.
Closes valves and refills master brake cylinder.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 


LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. 


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. 


REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. 


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid drivers license required to move vehicles in and out of shop. Commercial drivers license preferred. Must currently be or able to obtain ASE certification.
