Summary/objective

A semi-mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining semi-trucks and semi-trailers to ensure they operate safely and efficiently. This role involves inspecting, troubleshooting, and performing mechanical and electrical repairs on various components of semi-truck systems.

Essential functions

  1.  Diagnostic Work: Conduct thorough inspections and use diagnostic tools to identify issues with semi-trucks and trailers, including engine problems, brake system malfunctions, electrical issues, and more.
  2. Repairs and Maintenance: Perform repairs and maintenance tasks, such as engine overhauls, brake adjustments, transmission repairs, suspension work, and other mechanical and electrical repairs.
  3. Scheduled Maintenance: Follow manufacturer-recommended maintenance schedules to prevent breakdowns and ensure vehicles are in compliance with safety regulations.
  4. Part Replacement: Replace faulty or worn-out parts, such as belts, hoses, filters, and brake components. Ensure that the replacement parts meet industry standards.
  5. Welding and Fabrication: Conduct welding and fabrication work to repair damaged frames, trailer bodies, or other structural components.
  6. Documentation: Maintain accurate records of repairs, parts used, and maintenance tasks performed. This documentation helps track vehicle histories and compliance with regulations.
  7. Safety Compliance: Ensure that all work is completed in accordance with safety regulations and standards, including those set by the Department of Transportation (DOT).
  8. Testing and Quality Control: Conduct thorough testing and quality checks on repaired or serviced vehicles to verify that they meet safety and performance standards.
  9. Customer Service: Communicate with customers to explain repair needs, estimated costs, and repair timelines. Provide excellent customer service and address customer concerns professionally.
  10. Tool Maintenance: Properly maintain and store tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance processes.

Qualifications

Competencies

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of semi-truck and trailer systems, including engines, transmissions, brakes, and electrical systems.
  • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and equipment.
  • Welding and fabrication skills are often beneficial.
  • Physical strength and stamina to lift heavy parts and work in physically demanding conditions.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to safety.
  • Valid driver's license may be required.
  • Willingness to keep up with industry advancements and attend training as needed.

Preferred education and experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a formal vocational or technical training program in diesel mechanics or a related field is preferred.
  • Relevant certifications, such as ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification, may be required or preferred.
