HOURS:         8 hrs/day  (4 hrs at assistant mechanic rate - $24.26; 4 hours at bus driver rate - $21.84)

REPORTS TO:    Director of Facilities and Transportation   

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  • Assists the shop mechanic in all areas by completing the assigned repair workload independently.
  • Maintains an inventory and recommends purchase of supplies, tools, and equipment.
  • Establishes an efficient and effective system of parts and supplies; keeping accurate records and inventory.
  • Diagnoses, repairs, and services all buses and district owned vehicles and equipment, both gas and diesel.
  • Keeps up to date records on all district vehicles and equipment.
  • Helps maintain district audio/visual equipment.
  • Promotes high standards of safety and cleanliness and organization in all work areas
  • Carry out special regulations relating to the bus maintenance program.
  • Maintains shop and work area by setting high standards for cleanliness and organization
  • Drives school bus or transportation vehicle over assigned route in accordance with time schedule.
  • Boards and discharges student passengers in a safe and orderly manner.
  • Transports students, staff, and chaperones on field trips, athletic activities, and other special trips.
  • Maintains good order among students on buses, following District policies regarding discipline of children and contact with parents and other citizens.  Prepares student discipline citations as needed.
  • Perform pre-trip/post-trip vehicle inspections and complete daily work sheet for equipment operated.
  • Maintains bus fleet cleanliness on a daily basis, including washing, as needed.
  • Keep work location and vehicle in order. 
  • Performs minor bus maintenance checks and reports maintenance needs.
  • Renders first aid or emergency assistance as needed and holds a valid CPR/First Aid certificate.
  • Pick up trash and recyclable materials and transport to proper facility; may transport other materials in District vehicles.
  • Services buses with gas and oil; checks tires, battery and belts.
  • During times buses are not in use, may be assigned to general maintenance and cleanup activities in the transportation department.
  • Ensures compliance with application provisions of state motor vehicle code and education code, as related to bus driving and transporting students.
  • Maintain safe and efficient operation of solid waste collection.
  • Knowledge of – traffic laws involved in equipment operations; safe operations of and safety precautions necessary in operation of equipment, including various types of solid waste collection trucks. 
  • Ability to - communicate effectively orally and in writing; understand and carry out written and oral instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the public.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • High school diploma or equivalent; previous bus driver/mechanical work desirable; or any combination of training and experience.
  • Possession of valid Montana commercial driver’s license with endorsement for air brakes, passengers and school bus; or the ability to obtain license within 90 days of hire.
  • Ability to pass mandatory physical, substance tests, and background check.
  • Knowledge of mechanical and safety practices related to automotive.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical labor.
  • Knowledge of various chemicals related to an automotive garage and able to understand safety data sheets.
  • Ability to work effectively without close supervision; Work history demonstrating dependability and reliability; good driving record.
  • Must pay attention to detail.
  • Understand and follow a work schedule.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations.
  • Ability to effectively manage time and responsibilities.

EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS USED:

 

Two-way radio equipment, special needs equipment, telephone/voice mail.   Regular tools and equipment used in maintaining vehicles.  Must be able to work with various materials and chemicals common in an automotive garage.



WORK ENVIRONMENT:

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works outside in extreme weather and conditions; heat, cold, diesel smoke, pollen, etc.  The employee must be able to work at a fast pace to get the job done in the allotted time frame safely.

 

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, stand, travel from one building to another, push and pull heavy equipment, climb, stoop, crouch, grasp, twist at neck and waist, reach, and kneel.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  May be required to lift, move, and/or carry up to 50 pounds.  This position will require repetitive motions of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.   The employee is required to be able to hear conversations in quiet environments.

 

A pre-employment physical will be conducted before the position will be awarded to an individual.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee often performs routine work.  Guidance and reinforcement are usually unavailable.  The employee frequently works within time constraints and maintains attentiveness intensity.  The employee may be involved in interactions which require oral and written communications.

  2. CDL - Each driver must possess a current Commercial Driver's License with air brake and school bus endorsements, and a minimum of five years licensed driving experience.  If you do not currently possess a CDL, please contact 892.6550 x 1421 to schedule training.
  3. DOT Physical Exam - A physical examination is mandatory to verify the health status of the applicant.
  4. CPR & First Aid - A current CPR and first aid certificate must be obtained, or verification of sign-up in an upcoming class.
  5. Driving Record - Copy of your current driving record from the Department of Motor Vehicles  (https://cars.dojmt.gov/app/_/#1)

If hired, these requiremens must be met before the first day of work:

  1. Pre-employment drug test - District will contact you for your appointment.
  2. Fingerprinting - This district requires final candidates to pay for their own background check. Fingerprinting is done by appointment only; please call Karla Therrien at (406) 892-6550, ext. 1421. The cost is $30.00, payable by cash or check only, at the time of service.
  3. MMR immunization records – If born after December 31, 1956, you will need to provide proof of immunity (titer test) or medical records verifying that your Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccinations are up-to-date before the first day of work.
