Diesel Mechanic
GENERAL INFORMATION
Title: Diesel Mechanic Department: Transportation Salary Grade: Classified Pay Schedule D

POSITION SUMMARY

Under direction, performs skilled mechanical work in repairing and maintaining school buses and other automotive equipment. Employees perform routine tasks in servicing automotive equipment with lubricants, accessories, and parts. Also, you may perform general custodial duties at the garage or assist in the transportation parts room, receiving, and issuing stock.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Lubricates buses, automobiles, and trucks; fills gas tanks and services vehicles with oil and antifreeze; checks air pressure in tires; answers road calls of disabled vehicles, changes tires, charges batteries, and makes minor emergency repairs; makes shop repairs to damages tires.
  • Repairs, adjusts, or replaces individual or component parts on buses, automobiles, and other automotive equipment, including valves, pistons, bearing assemblies, and cooling, feed, and exhaust systems, tunes motors, repairs and adjusts generators and starters, tests circuits, and does diverse electrical work.
  • Replaces muffles, tail pipes, hoses, light bulbs, windshield wipers and fan belts. Assists in body and fender repair and paint work.
  • Assists in relining or changing brakes, replaces grease seals and bleeding brake systems, assist in tuning engines, cleaning air filters and adjusting carburetors.
  • Assures continuous adherence to safety regulations and best practices.
  • Dispenses fuel from distribution facilities on the premises, to include maintaining proper records of activity of the facility.
  • Receives parts, supplies, and tools; sweeps garage floor and premises; cleans and replaces tools and equipment.
  • Serves as a substitute bus driver when required.
  • Remains on call and responds appropriately to emergency situations including after-hours emergency road calls and snow removal.
  • Preforms related duties as required.

  • EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or GED diploma required.
  • Experience in the performance of a wide variety of increasingly responsible and skilled automotive mechanic work.
  • Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (w/air brake, passenger and school bus endorsements).
  • ASE test certification preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the standard practice; tools and equipment of the automotive trade; considerable knowledge of the operating principles and mechanics of internal combustion engines, fuel and hydraulic systems of a variety of automotive equipment; working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Working knowledge of the practices and procedures of operating a service and repair garage, including parts ordering, inventory, and record keeping. Ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical or structural problems, and to effectively adjust or repair a wide variety of automotive equipment; ability to make road tests and other checks both to determine problems and to determine effectiveness or repairs and adjustments; ability to make efficient use of labor and materials available at work location. Good communication and human relations skills.
