Diesel Technician
Department: Service
Reports to: Service Manager
Salary: $25.00 hour- $45.00 hour
Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Diesel Technician to join our service department specializing in diesel powered Chevy and GMC vehicles (including medium-duty trucks). The ideal candidate will have strong diagnostic skills, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team to deliver high-quality repairs and maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnoses, repair, and perform maintenance on diesel engines and related systems (fuel injection, turbochargers, exhaust after-treatment, emission controls, etc.).
- Perform advanced diagnostics using manufacturer/GM diagnostic tools, data observations, programming/reflating GM systems as needed.
- Conduct inspections (multi-point, preventative maintenance) and identify issues, prepare work order quotes and communicate with service advisors about required repairs.
- Repair or replace mechanical, electrical, and electrical components including engine, transmission, drive train, steering, braking, suspension, exhaust, cooling system, etc.
- Test-drive vehicles to confirm repairs and ensure proper operation.
- Complete documentation of repair procedures parts used, labor hours, warranty claims, and ensure all work meets quality and safety standards.
- Mentor technicians and support team goals.
- Maintain shop tools, equipment, cleanliness and safety standards.
- Stay current with vehicle technology, GM service bulletins and diesel system trends.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years (or appropriate years) of experience working on diesel engines or diesel trucks/medium-duty vehicles.
- Strong background in diesel diagnostics, mechanical repairs, preferably with Chevrolet, GM, CMC diesel platforms.
- Ability to produce consistent flat-rate hours (e.g., 80-100 hours per week or as measured) and thrive in a fast-paced dealership environment.
- Proficiency with GM diagnostic software, reprogramming and date observations.
- Valid driver’s license. CDL may be required depending on vehicle types.
- Excellent communication skills, good technician-to-customer/advisor interaction ability.
- Ability to lift heavy components, work in physically demanding conditions (standing, bending, reaching).
