Hours / Work Times 

 

School Year: 8 Hours Per Day (2:30 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. includes 30 minute unpaid lunch)
Winter, Spring & Summer Breaks: 8 Hours Per Day (8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. includes 30 minute unpaid lunch)

 

260 Days Per Year 

 

This position will remain open until a qualified applicant is selected.  The earliest date a recommendation for hire may be submitted is after 08/27/2025.

Salary Placement: New employees will start at the minimum hourly rate in the classification salary range. However, employees who have verified prior years of service of similar occupational experience may receive experience credit towards salary step placement.

SUMMARY STATEMENT:

Under the supervision of the Lead Mechanic, the Journey Mechanic diagnoses mechanical problems, performs journey level work, and performs maintenance on buses and related equipment. The Journey Mechanic position also requires knowledge and experience in servicing a wide variety of vehicles.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Communicate effectively with staff, vendors, and the general public.
  2. Diagnose and oversee the repair of mechanical, electrical, and engine defects in buses and other automotive equipment.
  3. Diagnose engines, transmissions, differentials, hydraulic and air brake systems, and other major components for repair and replacement of parts.
  4. Repair and rebuild generators, alternators, starters, and all other electrical components, utilizing testing devices and machine equipment.
  5. Perform general tune-ups, utilizing diagnostic equipment.
  6. Perform minor roadside repairs, or tow disabled vehicles to the maintenance shop.
  7. Repair and replace seats, glass, sheet metal, latches, and other body components and assemblies.
  8. Change oil and filters, install antifreeze and snow chains, repair tires, adjust brakes, lubricate chassis, wheel bearings, and other assemblies.
  9. Perform regular bus safety inspections and establish and maintain preventative maintenance programs.
  10. Operate battery chargers, valve refacing, and reseating machine, compression gauges, torque wrenches, welding (acetylene and arc) equipment, grinders, reamers, timing lights, hoists, jacks, porta-power, pumps, compressors, alignment board, drills, presses, headlight adjustment machines, air wrenches, small lathe, spark plug tester, and other tools, equipment and machines required for performing repair and maintenance of motor vehicles.
  11. Complete vehicle maintenance forms, work orders, and records.
  12. Operate laptop computer and palm pilot for bus diagnostic computer programs.
  13. Clean and help organize the shop, parts room and parking facilities.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. May be required to drive bus on occasion.
  2. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Computer, Palm Pilot, Battery charger, valve refacing and reseating machines, compression gauges, torque wrenches, welding (acetylene and arc) equipment, grinders, reamers, timing lights, hoists, jacks, porta-power, pumps, compressors, alignment board, drills, presses, headlight adjustment machines, air wrenches, lathes, spark plug testers, and all other tools and equipment necessary to perform the essential functions as listed above.

Complete set of 1/4" square drive sockets, standard and metric

Complete set of 3/8" square drive sockets, standard and metric

Complete set of 1/2" square drive sockets, standard and metric

Wrenches

Combination: 18 standard (1/4 - 1 5/16") and 18 metric (6 - 22, 24, mm)

Open End:  6 standard (1/4 x 5/16 - 3/4 x 7/8") and 6 metric (6 x 8 - 16 x 18 mm)

 Flare nut:  4 standard (3/8 x 7/16 - 3/4 x 7/8") and 5 metric (9 x 11 - 19 x 21 mm)

 Tappet:  3/8 x 7/16 - 3/4 x 7/8"

Specialty Tools

 Screwdrivers:  3 Phillips (#1, #2, #3) and 3 slotted (1/8 x 4, 3/16 x 4, 1/4 x 6")

 Nut Drivers:  7 standard (3/16 - 1/2") and 7 metrics (5 - 11 mm)

 40 pc. Hex Key set:  20 standard and 20 metric 

 Hacksaw:  5 hacksaw blades

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a heavy truck and bus mechanic, or full journey status as a heavy duty truck and bus mechanic in a Union and four years of applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis, not to exceed two years.
  2. Must possess or must be able to obtain a valid Washington State Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  3. Must have a minimum of five (5) years of diesel mechanic experience.
  4. Certified welder (gas and electrical) preferred.
  5. Must have successfully completed the Automotive Service Excellence (A.S.E.) tests (5 of 7) for Bus Mechanic, and must be able to update as required.
  6. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.
  7. Demonstrated ability to operate the tools and equipment as listed above.
  8. Demonstrated ability to work from instruction in technical manuals as well as carry out verbal and other written instructions.
  9. Demonstrated ability to problem solve.
  10. Demonstrated ability to work under constant interruption and perform under deadline pressure.
  11. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with others as part of a team.
