Summary

Employee in this position is responsible for performing preventative maintenance and general overhaul work of a mechanical nature designed to ensure the effective functioning of equipment including but not limited to cars, trucks, graders, bulldozers and related gas or diesel construction equipment. 

Job Duties

  • Perform general mechanical overhaul maintenance and repair work on cars, trucks, graders, bulldozers, and related construction equipment. 
  • Inspecting, rebuilding, and/or replacing gasoline or diesel engines.
  • Perform a variety of preventative maintenance tasks by checking, repairing, and replacing brakes, lights, doors, steering, gears, fuel pumps, carburetors, generators, and alternators.
  • Change and repair tires and tubes.
  • Repair and overhaul manual transmissions, differentials, front and rear assemblies, and ignition systems.
  • Repair and install hydraulic controls.
  • Tune motors using standard testing equipment.
  • Repair and rebuild hydraulic jacks, pumps, and cylinders.
  • Service vehicles and equipment with gasoline and oil, change oil, lubricants and filters.
  • Inventory and requisition parts and supplies and schedule work production.
  • Weld and modify equipment and fabricate parts as needed.
  • Ability to do minor body and frame repair.
  • Assist other road crew members in routine road maintenance activities to include but not limited to picking up dead animals, replacing stop signs, street signs as well as snow and ice removal.
  • Perform other tasks as directed.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of the tools, equipment, and technology used in the repair and maintenance of motorized equipment.
  • Knowledge of the principles governing internal combustion engines.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the mechanical trade.
  • Knowledge of the principles of diesel engines.
  • Knowledge of the principles of gasoline engines.
  • Ability to diagnose electrical and mechanical failures.
  • Ability to comprehend technical instructions in repair manuals.
  • Ability to perform repairs to motorized equipment.
  • Ability to weld, fabricate and modify equipment.
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions and to interpret plans and sketches.
  • Ability to care for tools, equipment, and materials of the mechanic trade.
  • Ability to successfully diagnose and repair defects in automotive equipment.
  • Knowledge of and ability to operate P.C. computers.
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

Education, Experience & Certifications

  • Minimum of five (5) years experience in the repair of automotive and diesel equipment, or successful completion of technical school on gasoline and diesel engines with three (3) years of practical experience, or completion of a recognized apprenticeship program in the automotive/diesel mechanical field with three (3) years of practical experience.
  • Possession of a valid Washington State Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A with Air Brakes or a valid Washington State driver's license with the ability to obtain a CDL within a six-(6) month period. CDL Drive Brake Adjustment Certified.
  • Ability to acquire a Washington State Flagger's certification.
