Job Title                     Mechanic II

Reports To              Equipment Maintenance Supervisor

 

MECHANIC II’s role within the big picture of the City’s overall success.

 

The Mechanic II performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance, repair, and inspection of the City of Alton’s fleet, including gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles, construction equipment, and emergency response units. The Mechanic II also assists with inventory control, fuel island monitoring, and workspace organization. This position serves as a working technician, participating directly in repairs while contributing to the safe and efficient operation of the department.

 

Education and Experience – An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.

Education     Associate’s Degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology. Five years of verified related employment experience as a mechanic, and a high school diploma or equivalent will be considered in lieu of an Associate’s Degree.

Experience   Three years of previous relevant work experience is required.

Certifications   Class A CDL, emergency vehicle technician training, underground storage tank training, automotive repair training, forklift certification, flagger certification. One or more certifications related to automotive or heavy trucks are preferred. (ASE, EVT, MVAC)

MECHANIC II functions include but are not limited to the following.

Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance:

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain all types of city-owned vehicles and equipment, including light, medium, and heavy-duty units.

Inspections and Service:

  • Perform detailed inspections, identify issues, and complete required services including oil changes, brake work, and system diagnostics.

Parts Ordering and Fabrication:

  • Order or retrieve necessary parts, fabricate discontinued or modified parts as needed, and ensure availability for scheduled repairs.

Inventory Management:

  • Track and account for garage supplies, tools, and replacement parts used in daily operations.

Shop Organization and Housekeeping:

  • Maintain clean, safe, and organized workspaces; clean tools and equipment after use.

Fuel Island Monitoring:

  • Monitor fuel levels, check fuel system components for wear or damage, and ensure adequate supply and safe functionality of the fuel station.

 

The individual in this role is expected to contribute to the team's efforts by completing other related tasks as needed.

  • Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine systems, hydraulics, electrical systems, and diagnostics.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations for fuel storage, shop operations, and vehicle repair.
  • Knowledge of proper disposal procedures for automotive fluids and hazardous materials.
  • Knowledge of emergency vehicle systems and service requirements.
  • Skill in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Skill in using hand tools, diagnostic equipment, power tools, welders, and fabrication tools.
  • Skill in reading technical manuals, service charts, and vehicle schematics.
  • Skill in safely operating forklifts, service trucks, and city vehicles.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team under direction from the Garage Supervisor.
  • Ability to track parts and supplies and assist with garage inventory needs.
  • Ability to maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment.

All Mechanic Hand Tools, Wrenches, Sockets, Pliers, Impacts, Tool Boxes/Carts, Electrical Tools and Meters, etc.

 

Work Environment or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.

  • May be required to work in high or dangerous places.
  • Work may involve potentially life-threatening exposure to extreme temperatures, humidity, noise, chemical/gases, contagious diseases, airborne particles/pathogens, and/or physical trauma.
  • May regularly be exposed to uncomfortable temperatures, humidity, noise, chemicals/gases, contagious diseases, airborne particles/pathogens, and/or physical trauma.
  • May be required to work in confined spaces.
  • May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
  • May be exposed to biohazards or bloodborne pathogens.
  • Work may potentially involve risk of exposure to electric shock.
