SUMMARY

The Trains, Heavy Equipment & Truck Mechanic analyzes heavy equipment and trucks to discover and troubleshoot malfunctions and repairs, rebuilds and maintains heavy power equipment such as, but not limited to, trains, cranes, brush cutters, trench-digging machines, excavators, backhoes, front-end loaders, regulators, tampers, high rail gear, and trucks. Incumbent will be responsible to operate and inspect trains, heavy equipment and trucks to diagnose defects, track service requested and performed, safely repair/replace parts or equipment, and perform quality assurance tests prior to placing equipment back in service.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to):

  • Develop and maintain an up-to-date request system, maintenance plan schedule, and tracking system (log) to include dates work was started and completed, detailed description of work performed, equipment/parts worked on, scheduled future service dates, pictures of repair issues, and serial numbers of new and used parts etc., for all maintenance requests for heavy equipment and trucks.
  • Conduct interviews with machine operators to verify symptoms of equipment problem.
  • Inspect machines, engines, transmissions, etc. and run diagnostic tests to discover functionality issues.
  • Analyze malfunctions to diagnose defects then determine and execute the best solution for the repair.
  • Repairs and/or replaces defective or worn-out parts and equipment and tests new and overhauled equipment to ensure operating efficiency prior to placing equipment back in service.
  • Perform and track scheduled routine maintenance on all trucks and heavy equipment.
  • Dismantle and rebuild/reassemble equipment, and maintain all fleet power equipment.
  • Build and assemble machines or mechanical components according to vendor’s specifications and requirements.
  • Perform thorough, routine maintenance on machinery, equipment, and systems such as, but not limited to cleaning and applying lubricants, and checking and replenishing fluids and components of equipment.
  • Provide consultation on the correct usage, maintenance, and preventative measures to machine or vehicle operators.
  • Tag and maintain and up-to-date log of all warranty parts and complete and submit the necessary warranty paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Use appropriate electronic and manual equipment and hand tools to make repairs.
  • Collaborate and interact with customers, vendors, contractors, and co-workers in a positive, courteous, and professional manner to foster building and maintaining effective relationships, while also upholding the rights and interests of the Company.
  • As travel is mandatory to visit work sites, incumbent must possess and maintain a current and valid driver’s license in good standing and be insurable under Massachusetts Coastal Railroad’s auto policy throughout employment.
  • Must adhere to the rules, guidelines, regulations, and policies of the Company, Commonwealth of MA, federal government, FRA, NORAC Operating Rules, health and safety, and Employee Handbook.
  • Weld broken parts and structural members, if necessary.
  • Determine potential new parts and tools needed for the job and submit a request for purchase per established internal guidelines.
  • Responsible for notifying supervisor of possible excessive costs for repairs prior to repairing, and obtaining supervisor’s written approval of such.
  • Read and interpret equipment maintenance requests and communicate with supervisor for any needed clarification of defects and to discuss preventative techniques and implementation plan.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • CDL is desirable but not required.
  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Experience inspecting and troubleshooting mechanical and electronic components on a wide variety of trains, heavy-duty equipment and trucks using various diagnostic equipment; and repairing, cleaning, replacing defective parts of components and systems.
  • Skilled in planning, controlling, executing, multi-tasking, and being responsible for the successful completion of work requirements.
  • Ability to effectively read and write in English, comprehend written instructions, perform common mathematical tasks, and communicate effectively.
  • Knowledge of machinery and hydraulic, electrical, and other systems and their components.
  • Aptitude in using various electronic, power, and manual hand tools.
  • Certification from a vocational school or completion of apprenticeship is preferred.
  • Valid certification (i.e., Automotive Service Excellence) is preferred.
  • Welding experience is preferred.
