Lead Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Assists the Mechanic Supervisor with day-to-day operations and limited duties during supervisor absence. Perform a variety of skilled labor duties associated with mechanic work on heavy duty equipment on county vehicles. Work is of a changing nature and initiative must be used to be able to handle different situations as necessary.

• Serve as lead person in the Supervisor's absence, leading crew activity while also serving as a hands-on mechanic.
• Provide technical assistance to subordinate staff and ensure productivity, shop cleanliness, safety, and mechanical excellence, including diagnostics and preventative maintenance.
• Diagnose mechanical problems or failures, including repairs to electrical system components and heating and air conditioning systems, either visually or using automotive diagnostic equipment.
• Organize and prioritize the repair and maintenance schedules to ensure equipment is operational and minimize downtime.
• Work closely with the Fleet Supervisor and Fleet Manager to provide maintenance workload status, prepare work orders, and approve purchase requests.
• Communicate professionally with customers, team members, and vendors.
• Ensure compliance on a day-to-day basis with State, Federal, and Company requirements.

• Knowledge of preventative and recurring maintenance and repair programs in order to develop and supervise programs to ensure quality maintenance and repair.
• Knowledge of safety practices and precautions sufficient to be able to supervise, train and provide safety instructions to subordinates and others and to recognize and correct hazardous situations.
• Knowledge of equipment and supplies sufficient to be able to determine the proper part is ordered.
• Knowledge of mathematics sufficient to be able to perform a variety of computations.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships with superiors and fellow workers; ability to communicate effectively.
• Ability to safely operate automotive and heavy equipment; including automatic and manual shift.
• Basic computer skills to include word processing, spreadsheets, email, and specialized Fleet Management software.
• Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written English. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Education and Experience:

• A High School Diploma or GED equivalent
• A minimum total of eight (8) years of relevant experience, including four (4) years as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic or equivalent level, performing a broad range of repairs on heavy-duty and construction vehicular equipment and gasoline and diesel-powered cars and trucks standard to public jurisdiction
• Any equivalent combination of education and work experience that satisfy the requirements of the job will be considered.
• Must complete and maintain Master ASE certification throughout employment. All certifications must be received within one (1) year of appointment and maintained throughout employment.

• Vocational courses in automotive or heavy truck mechanics
• One (1) + year experience as a supervisor or lead.
• Prior experience training staff.

Pre-Employment Additional Requirements:

• Must pass pre-employment testing, including an acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR), background check, physical capabilities examination, and drug screen.
• Possession of a valid Class "R" Colorado Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within two weeks of appointment.
• It will require fingerprinting and a Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) background check.

• This position is deemed essential, and incumbents must be available for winter storms and other emergencies and to work on an on-call rotation basis, which requires evenings, holidays, and weekends.
• Work locations and facilities are subject to change based on business needs.
• Must complete and maintain five ASE certifications throughout employment. ASE Air Conditioning Certification, ASE Suspension & Steering Certification, ASE Electrical/ Electronic Systems Certification, and ASE T4 Medium/ Heavy Truck Brake Certification must be obtained within six (6) months of appointment. A Master ASE certification must be obtained within one (1) year of appointment.
• Possession of a valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within twelve (12) months of appointment. HAZMAT endorsement is required.

• This position is deemed essential, and incumbents must be available for winter storms and other emergencies. They must work on an on-call rotation basis, which requires evenings, holidays, and weekends.
• Position may require work to be performed in the field as well as the shop, thus exposing incumbents to all weather conditions, fumes, smoke, and high noise levels and potentially dangerous working conditions.
• Work locations and facilities are subject to change based on business needs.

• Spends a majority of the time either walking or standing while in the shop or field.
• Lifts carry, push, and pull up to 75 lbs. while performing mechanical functions in the shop and field.
• May be required to frequently lift heavy and awkward objects, up to 75 lbs., from ground level to waist level or higher, either on solid ground or while balancing (Ex. on a ladder).
• Occasionally balances, stoops, crouches, and kneels while performing duties in the shop and field.
• Oral and auditory capacity enables interpersonal communication through automated devices such as the two-way radio.
• Auditory capacity to endure long-term exposure to loud noises.
• Using tools and machinery, frequent eye, hand, and finger coordination is used.
• Physical capacity to safely operate County vehicles and machinery.

• Far Acuity: the ability to see clearly at 20 feet or more

• Depth Perception: the ability to judge distance and space relationships
